Orange Africa Cup of Nations bound Angola were held to a 0-0 draw by a second-string Nigeria side in Abuja while in Johannesburg another Orange CAN 2012 finalist Zambia were also held to a 1-1 by a makeshift South Africa team.
"The Nigeria team were stronger than we thought but I'm happy that we came away with a draw. They were very determined. It's still a shock that they did not qualify for the Nations Cup," said Angola coach Lito Vidigal.
Angola paraded top stars like Manucho and Flavio Amado and attacked from the blast of the first whistle, before the Nigeria team made up of players from the country's local league took control. Enugu Rangers lively forward Ejike Uzoenyi shone on the left flank as Nigeria threw away the several chances they created.
Ossai Uche missed a clear chance after just 12 minutes, while Sunday Mba fluffed another opening in the 34th minute, before Obinna Nwachukwu blasted off target three minutes to the interval. In the second half, Nigeria strikers Uche Kalu and Barnabas Imenger missed more chances late on.
Meanwhile Bafana Bafana's young side fought bravely and forced a draw against Chipolopolo at Rand Stadium. Pitso Mosimane fielded a number of new players and after going down to an early goal scored by Stopilla Sunzu in the 8th minute. The South Africans replied through Ayanda Gcaba in the 58th minute .The Zambians had the better of the exchanges and missed some golden opportunities, with Collins Mbesuma and Christopher Katongo nearly adding to the scoreline. South Africa’s best chance came from a George Maluleka shot that sailed centimeters over Kennedy Mweene’s goal. Zambia continued to carve openings but could not put them away and Brilliant Khuzwayo in goal for Bafana Bafana was equally impressive on the other occasions the Zambia efforts were on target. In the 58th minute Bafana equalised when Maluleka crossed from the right and Ayanda Gcaba headed the ball home. There were further misses from Isaac Chansa before the final whistle but right at the end Katongo had his goal bound effort superbly saved by khuzwayo as the under-strength Bafana held on for a draw.
